Shipping Guide: FOB, CIF & DDP Explained

When you source car accessories from China, the shipping terms you choose affect your total landed cost, your risk exposure, and how much logistics work you handle yourself. This guide explains the three most common Incoterms — FOB, CIF, and DDP — and compares shipping methods, costs, and timelines so you can make informed decisions before placing your order.

Written by TireVac — factory-direct supplier of portable tire inflators and car vacuum cleaners shipping from Yiwu, China. All cost estimates reflect current market rates as of 2026 and are indicative only — actual rates vary by season, volume, and carrier.

Incoterms Basics

The Three Main Incoterms

Incoterms are standardized trade terms published by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) that define buyer and seller responsibilities in international transactions. For car accessories shipped from China, these three terms cover the vast majority of B2B orders.

FOB — Free on Board

The seller delivers the goods to the port of origin, cleared for export. Once the goods are loaded onto the vessel, all costs and risks transfer to the buyer. The buyer books the freight, arranges insurance, and handles import customs clearance. FOB gives you full control over shipping logistics and is the standard term for experienced importers who already have a freight forwarder.

CIF — Cost, Insurance & Freight

The seller pays the freight charge and provides minimum marine insurance to the destination port. Risk still transfers at the origin port — the seller's insurance obligation is limited to 110% of the invoice value under ICC C clause. The buyer handles import customs clearance and last-mile delivery. CIF is common for buyers who want the seller to arrange ocean freight but still manage import duties themselves.

DDP — Delivered Duty Paid

The seller is responsible for everything: freight, insurance, import customs clearance, duties, taxes, and delivery to the buyer's named location. The buyer receives the goods at their door with no additional logistics work. DDP is the most convenient option for buyers who want a simple, all-inclusive landed cost — but it typically comes at a premium because the seller prices in the risk and administrative overhead.

All three terms are defined by Incoterms 2020 (ICC). FOB and CIF apply only to sea and inland waterway transport. DDP applies to any mode of transport including air freight and express courier.

Choosing Terms

Which Term Should You Use?

First-Time Importer? Choose DDP

If you have never imported from China before and do not have a freight forwarder, DDP is the safest starting point. The seller handles all logistics, customs, and duties. You receive the goods at your warehouse with a single all-inclusive price. This lets you focus on learning your market without navigating customs paperwork. The trade-off is a higher per-unit cost and less control over transit routing.

Have a Freight Forwarder? Choose FOB

If you already work with a freight forwarder or customs broker, FOB gives you the most control and typically the lowest total cost. You choose the carrier, route, and insurance level. You can consolidate shipments from multiple suppliers into one container. FOB is the standard term for experienced importers doing regular volume — it offers the best flexibility and cost transparency.

Want a Middle Ground? Choose CIF

CIF works well if you want the seller to arrange ocean freight but you are comfortable handling import clearance on your end. It simplifies the origin-side logistics while keeping import duties and last-mile delivery under your control. CIF is a reasonable choice for buyers who are new to a specific trade lane but already have an import process in place.

We support all three terms. When you request a quote, let us know your preferred Incoterm and destination — we will provide pricing accordingly. If you are unsure, tell us your situation and we will recommend the best option.

Shipping Methods

Shipping Methods for Car Accessories

MethodTransit Time (China to US/EU)Cost EstimateBest For
Sea freight (FCL — Full Container)25–35 days$1,800–$3,500 per 20ft containerLarge orders (10+ CBM); lowest per-unit cost
Sea freight (LCL — Less than Container)30–45 days$45–$85 per CBMMid-size orders (1–10 CBM); shared container
Air freight (standard)5–8 days$4.50–$8.00 per kgUrgent orders; lightweight high-value products
Air freight (DG / battery goods)7–12 days$6.00–$12.00 per kgProducts with lithium batteries; requires DG declaration
Express (DHL / FedEx / UPS)3–5 days$7.00–$15.00 per kgSamples, small orders under 100 kg
Rail freight (China–Europe)18–25 days$2.50–$4.50 per kgMid-ground between sea and air for EU-bound cargo

When to Use Sea Freight

Sea freight is the default for bulk B2B orders of car accessories. A standard 20ft container holds approximately 25–28 CBM and can fit 800–2,000+ units depending on product size. If your order exceeds 2 CBM, sea freight is almost always more cost-effective than air. LCL (shared container) is viable for orders between 1–10 CBM; above that, an FCL booking is more economical.

When to Use Air Freight

Air freight makes sense for urgent replenishment, product launches with tight deadlines, or lightweight high-value items. For car accessories, air freight is most common for sample shipments, small first orders, or when a buyer needs stock before a trade show or promotional event. Note that lithium battery products require DG (Dangerous Goods) air freight, which costs more and has carrier restrictions.

Battery Products

Special Requirements for Battery Products

Many of our products — cordless tire inflators, cordless car vacuum cleaners, and jump starters — contain lithium-ion batteries. Shipping lithium battery products requires additional documentation and compliance steps that affect cost and transit time.

UN38.3 Test Report

Required for all lithium battery products shipped by air or sea. The UN38.3 report certifies that the battery has passed safety tests including altitude simulation, thermal cycling, vibration, shock, short circuit, impact, overcharge, and forced discharge. We hold valid UN38.3 reports for all our cordless models and provide copies on request.

MSDS / SDS (Safety Data Sheet)

A Material Safety Data Sheet is required by freight carriers and customs for products containing lithium batteries. The MSDS documents the battery chemistry, hazard classification, handling procedures, and emergency response measures. We provide MSDS documents for all battery-equipped products as part of the standard export documentation.

DG Declaration & Packaging

For air freight, lithium battery products must be declared as Dangerous Goods (DG Class 9) and packaged according to IATA regulations. This includes proper labeling (UN3481 for batteries packed with equipment), inner packaging protection, and a DG shipper's declaration. DG air freight costs 30–60% more than standard air freight and not all carriers accept DG cargo.

Sea Freight for Battery Products

Sea freight has fewer restrictions for lithium batteries than air freight. Products classified as UN3481 (batteries packed with equipment) under Section II quantities typically ship as limited quantity by sea with proper labeling and documentation — no full DG declaration required. This makes sea freight the more practical and cost-effective option for bulk battery product orders.

Express Courier (DHL / FedEx / UPS)

Express couriers accept lithium battery products but with weight and quantity limits per package. Each courier has its own acceptance policy — DHL and FedEx generally accept PI966 Section II shipments for batteries packed with equipment. We configure packaging to meet courier requirements for sample and small-quantity shipments.

Common Questions

Questions Buyers Ask About Shipping

Can you ship directly to Amazon FBA warehouses?

Yes. We can prepare shipments that comply with Amazon FBA requirements including carton labeling, poly-bagging, and shipment plan documentation. For DDP orders to FBA, we handle customs clearance and delivery to the designated fulfillment center. Confirm your FBA prep requirements at the quotation stage so we can include them in the pricing.

What happens if my shipment is held at customs?

Under FOB and CIF terms, the buyer is responsible for import customs clearance. Delays typically occur due to missing documentation, incorrect HS codes, or random inspections. We provide all required export documents — commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificates of origin, and test reports — to minimize clearance issues. Under DDP, we handle import clearance and bear the customs risk.

How do I calculate my landed cost?

Landed cost = product cost + shipping freight + insurance + import duties + customs broker fees + last-mile delivery + warehousing fees. Under FOB, you control and pay each line item separately. Under CIF, freight and insurance are included in the seller's price. Under DDP, everything except warehousing is included. We can provide a DDP quote that gives you a single all-inclusive number for easy margin calculation.

Can I combine products from multiple categories in one shipment?

Yes. We consolidate tire inflators, car vacuum cleaners, jump starters, and other car accessories into a single shipment. Mixed-product orders ship together from our warehouse in Yiwu. This reduces per-unit shipping cost compared to ordering each category separately. Just confirm all SKUs and quantities at the order stage.

What is the minimum order for sea freight to be worthwhile?

As a general rule, sea freight becomes cost-effective when your shipment exceeds 2 CBM (approximately 150–300 units depending on product size). Below 2 CBM, LCL rates and handling fees may make air freight or express courier more economical. We can advise on the break-even point for your specific order and destination.

Do you offer free shipping or freight-included pricing?

We do not advertise free shipping — but we can quote CIF or DDP pricing that includes freight in the unit price. This gives you a single number per unit that covers delivery to your port (CIF) or your door (DDP). Many buyers prefer this for simpler cost comparison and margin planning. Just let us know your destination and preferred Incoterm when requesting a quote.
